Ill-health

Not everyone is lucky enough to remain in good health throughout their working life. The BAA Pension Scheme enables you to take a pension should you have to retire early due to ill-health or injury.

If you are unable to work in any occupation, then you will be able to take your pension benefits early without penalty. Your pension will be based on:

  • Your Pensionable Salary at the time of your ill-health retirement; and
  • The Pensionable Service you would have completed had you continued working for BAA until your Normal Pension Date.

If you are unable to continue to work in your current role or any other role with BAA, but you could work for another employer, your pension will be calculated based on:

  • Your Pensionable Salary at the date of your ill-health retirement; and
  • Your Pensionable Service at the date of your ill-health retirement, plus an additional five years’ Pensionable Serviceb.

b If you are part-time immediately prior to retirement on the grounds of ill-health or injury, the additional five years’ Pensionable Service will be reduced proportionately, according to your part-time hours.

As with normal retirement, you will be able to give up some of your pension in return for a tax-free cash sum.

If you are a shift worker, your Pensionable Service will be calculated assuming that you would have continued to receive the same amount of shift pay and build the same level of Shift Credits that you received in the 12 months immediately preceding your ill-health retirement.

Again, Shift Credits are in addition to any Pensionable Service accrued and therefore can take your Pensionable Service over the maximum limit of 36 years.

The medical advice to be taken by the Trustee and the Company before agreeing to the payment of an ill-health pension will have regard to the requirements of CAP 168.
